An Examination of Soil Crusts on the Floor of Jezero Crater, Mars

چکیده

Martian soils are critically important for understanding the history of Mars, past potentially habitable environments, returned samples, and future human exploration. This paper examines soil crusts on floor Jezero crater encountered during initial phases Mars 2020 mission. Soil surface have been observed at other locations, starting with two Viking Lander missions. Rover observations show that also common across crater, revealed in 45 101 locations where rover wheels disturbed surface, 2 out 7 helicopter flights crossed wheel tracks, 4 8 abrasion/drilling sites. Most measured by SuperCam laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument high hydrogen content fine-grained a visible/near infrared (VISIR) 1.9 µm H2O absorption feature. The Planetary Instrument X-ray Lithochemistry (PIXL) suggest presence salts rocks soils. correlation S Cl contents H LIBS measurements suggests present likely hydrated. On “Naltsos” target, magnesium sulfur correlated PIXL measurements, Mg is tightly points, suggesting hydrated Mg-sulfates. Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA) indicate possible frost events potential changes hydration Mg-sulfate salts. may therefore form relative humidity events, cementing together.

Stratigraphy and Evolution of Delta Channel Deposits, Jezero Crater, Mars

Introduction: The Jezero impact crater hosted an open-basin lake [1] that was active during the valley network forming era on early Mars [2]. This basin contains a well exposed delta deposit at the mouth of the western inlet valley (Fig. 1) [1,3-5]. The fluvial stratigraphy of this deposit provides a record of the channels that built the delta over time. Here we describe observations of the str...

Assessing the mineralogy of the watershed and fan deposits of the Jezero crater paleolake system, Mars

We present results from geomorphic mapping and visible to near-infrared spectral analyses of the Jezero crater paleolake basin and its associated watershed. The goal of this study is to understand the provenance of the sedimentary deposits within this open-basin lake using a source-to-sink approach. Two fan deposits located within the basin have distinct visible to near-infrared mineralogic sig...

An overfilled lacustrine system and progradational delta in Jezero crater, Mars Implications for Noachian climate

The presence of valley networks and open-basin lakes in the late Noachian is cited as evidence for overland flow of liquid water and thus a climate on early Mars that might have supported precipitation and runoff. Outstanding questions center on the nature of such a climate, its duration and variability, and its cause. Open basin lakes, their interior morphology, and their associated channels p...
